Antimicrobial Competence of Prepared Chitosan - Based Composites

How to cite this article: Journal of Advanced Materials, 2017,1, 1: 23-30 ABSTRACT Evaluation of antimicrobial activity with Ciprofloxacin (C) (control of antibacterial study) and ketoconazole (K) (control antifungal activity) compounds released from chitosan based composites [(A1 (CS/PVP/fMWCNT) A2 (CS/PVP/f-MWCNT-GLU)] against gram positive bacteria and gram negative have been studied. The inhibition zone diameter was determined after 48 hours of incubation by the Disc diffusion assay. There is significant increasing in the inhibition zone after 48 hrs. An evaluation of antimicrobial activity against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria (Escherichia coli (gram positive) and Bacillus subtilis (gram negative)) bacteria and antifungal activity with two species Penicillium notatum and Aspergillus niger has been performed. The antimicrobial activity of new derivatives prepared increased significantly more than chitosan in most microorganisms. The composite CS/PVP/f-MWCNT-GLU showed greater antimicrobial activity than CS/PVP/f-MWCNT. This study suggests the use of such matrices in the drug delivery system for local bioavailability of antibiotic compounds against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, while at the same time it is very important in handling of bacterial infections. The chitosan-MWCNT composite scaffold is a promising biomaterial for biomedical applications. Received: 27 March, 2017 Accepted: 26 April, 2017 Available Online: 05 May, 2017
